‘Into the White’ painting

300.00

The starting point for this painting was Arctic explorer Francis Leopold McClintock. He was born in my hometown of Dundalk in 1819. In reading about McClintock I discovered imaginative 1800s illustrations of the Arctic by artists who had never actually seen photos of it or been there. Their artwork inspired the imagery in my hinged triptychs as they open and close to reveal a mysterious inner world. The time period and Arctic setting reminded me as well of some of my favourite fantasy novels ‘His Dark Materials’ and ‘The Book of Dust’ by Philip Pullman. Their magical realism also influenced the finished piece.
